Google Analytics is the study of how a website's interaction with its visitors works "behind the scenes." The advantages are limitless for any organisation, especially in today's world, where customers are increasingly interacting online due to the expansion of smart technologies.

A business is at a disadvantage if they aren't actively monitoring the website's data. Google Analytics can help with marketing plans and are very valuable to the company's current trends, performance and growth.

Google Analytics allows businesses to distinguish the flaws of their website and focus on areas to improve. Google Analytics allows you to access valuable information. For example, how many people visit the website, your niche demographic (age, gender), whether they're new or returning visitors, how they sourced the website (organically, direct, paid or referral from another blog, website, or social post), what are the most and least popular pages, and how long people are spending on the site. In addition, you can compare the sites progress in an overview report from the previous month or quarter and see the areas where you have improved. Google Analytics is likely to provide the answer to any query you have regarding the performance of your website. The new knowledge will enable you to fine-tune the appearance and content of your website over time, ensuring that it becomes a powerful and successful tool for achieving your company goals.

One significant benefit of having Google Analytics for small businesses is that it is easy to install and free, with no hidden charges along the way. It's a no brainer!

Google Analytics is also very important for generating sales. By finding out your niche demographic, you can tailor your content to your audience's interests and deliver what the customer desires, resulting in more sales.

The location report is also a very valuable tool for small businesses as it shows you where your visitors are from geographically. The report can be broken down into country, region, and city. This is a wonderful report to have on hand to make sure you're reaching the appropriate individuals in the right places.

As Brian Gibson, Head of Digital Strategy & Partnerships said “Google Analytics is your best friend. Learn it." A very true statement in relation to small businesses as the benefits are limitless.

  1. We all trust our best friends so if Google Analytics is going to a best friend to my business, I will be paying attention. The location report sounds like it will generate great insights. In my current business we are breaking into a new international marketing so it will be interesting to see if after the recent campaign and new traffic gets generated from that part of the world. I will have to may sure to look at the location report on Google Analytics and then see what pages they are spending time on will give great insights. Brilliant tips and insights, thanks for sharing.

  2. 100% a no brainer. It is the best friend of a small business in particular. To quote Liam Neeson , it has "A particular set of skills" and any small business would be fools not to utilize it, especially when starting out as a company, budgets can be tight and marketing efforts get put no the long finger a lot of the time, so why not use a free tool to give yourself the edge. Google is a very reputable company, used by almost everybody in our delay life, would be silly to not use it here.

  4. You're absolutely right, Dervla - Google Analytics for small businesses should be a no brainer! On top of everything is provides - you mentioned the ability to find your niche demographic, increase sales, find the flaws in your website - it's all free! Google Analytics should definitely be every small businesses best friend and I think a lot of people don't know anything about it or what it could do for their success. While it would take a bit of time to learn, the information small business would get from GA is limitless! Helen hit the nail on the head in her comment above: we all trust our best friend. And we could all do with some more friends in our lives!

  5. Great blog, Dervla. And you're correct, a business is at a disadvantage if they aren't actively monitoring the website's data. Recently a business owner friend told me after weeks of wondering why people weren't signing up to an event, he realised the event shared through his blog on his website couldn't be signed up to due to Wordpress settings/preference. I enquired if he used Google Analytics and he does not. It got me thinking, if he had reports set up for his blog, conversions, sign ups, this issue may have come to light much sooner and could have been rectified. Google Analytics is great for showing not only what is going well within a business, but, also, what isn't!
